Fly Fishing

Caithness is known for its fishing. Salmon and trout are found in the many local rivers such as the Thurso and then there are the one hundred or so lochs.

Loch St John has a wheely boat for wheelchair bound anglers, there is no bag limit but all trout under 12" must be returned.
Costs appox £5.00 a day from the bank and £16.00 from the boat.

Loch Calder - you can fish ledger with worm as well as fly fishing to catch brown trout. Fish are generally small but lots of them. Permits £5.00 a year.

Harpsdale Stillwater Fishery which is the most northern fishery on mainland Britain and is approximately 10 miles south of Thurso. Rainbow are stocked to 14lbs and brown to 3lbs. Costs appox £25-£36.00 a day with a four fish limit. The site has drink making facilities and BBQ. South Pool has larger stock

Loch More which offers Salmon and trout fishing. Loch Beg, located near the start of the Thurso river provides some excellent fishing. Loch Watten famous as a trout loch with a strain of trout similar to Loch Leven from 1lb to 3lbs.

We provide a flask and packed lunch service as well as transport if required.

We stock permits for Loch Heilen.

Sea Fishing

Excellent sea fishing can also be found within walking distance of Castletown and we can offer boat charters. Local telephone numbers for boat fishing are available at the hotel which is also head quarters for the Castletown and district Fishing Club. Most people who have fished up here have caught more fish than they ever expected.

If you are coming up to fish please ring before hand and we will try to arrange a selection of venues to suit. If you bring your family we can arrange a sight seeing tour for them.

The Pentland Firth is the home to many species including haddock, wrass, ling and pollock. The area has the UK Record for Halibut and Portbeagle Shark.

Dunnet Beach is excellent for Sea Bass and flatties and this year a good number of fish are being taken from the beach.

Dwarwick Pier is excellent for Pollock and Ling using a local lure.
